Mythological Orchestra

Hey folks, spent some time in the studio today drawing away and I have come up with this idea I'm really excited about. I was listening to some orchestral soundtrack music, and thought wouldn't it be really fun if the orchestra was made up of a 'menagerie' of beasts. So with a pencil in one hand, and casting my mind back to an idea I had yesterday that I tweeted - (Just had a nutty idea, must tweet it before i forget - An Octopus conducting an Orchestra!) - I started scribbling down a few ideas about who could be included in this fictitious orchestra! Here is a few ideas I had: Mermaid Violinists, Giant Ogre Percussionists, An Angel Choir, An Octopus Conductor (of course!), Faun Cellists, Medusa/Sprite/Fairy Flutists, The Indian god Ganesha as an Oboe player, and many others!! Anybody else have any interesting nutty ideas, would love to hear them! So I started to illustrate some of these ideas and here fruits of my labour:

These drawings are 'mock' up ideas. Looking back at them, I think I may change a few of the characters around to 'fit' with the right instrument, I think Ganesha will perhaps feel a little more happy playing a glockenspiel with those four arms!! haha!

I plan to do a slightly larger scaled piece, compared to my others, that will combine lots of different monsters playing lots of different things, but of course I will have to find a place for my trademark fish! I could perhaps create a sort of Frieze-like image or maybe a mural, who knows, maybe someone who reads this blog might have the right wall to paint it onto!? :)

I know that each 'figure' will have to be positioned according to there place within the orchestra. I did a little research into the layout of all the instruments and will have to arrange them according to this basic framework:

I'm really excited about this idea and hopefully I will get some nice big versions of these figures up in the college studio space to brighten up the walls a little! Watch this space!
